Tooth Knocked Out
Tooth Knocked Out? Stay Calm & Act Fast!
A Knocked-Out Tooth Is a Dental Emergency – Here’s What to Do
Accidents happen—whether it’s a fall on the playground, a sports injury, or an unexpected impact, a knocked-out tooth requires immediate attention. Acting quickly and correctly can mean the difference between saving or losing the tooth!
At Children’s Dentistry of Germantown, we specialize in urgent pediatric dental care to help restore your child’s smile as quickly and comfortably as possible.
First 30 Minutes Matter! Follow These Steps
If your child’s tooth is knocked out, follow these steps immediately:
If It’s a PERMANENT (Adult) Tooth:
- Find the tooth – Pick it up by the crown (top part), NOT the root.
- DO NOT scrub or rinse the root – Gently rinse with milk or saline solution if dirty.
- Try to reinsert it into the socket – If possible, place it back gently and have your child bite down on a clean cloth.
- If reinserting isn’t possible, keep the tooth moist – Store it in cold milk, saliva, or saline. Avoid water!
- Call us IMMEDIATELY & get to the dentist within 30 minutes!
Fact: Teeth have the best chance of survival if reinserted within 30-60 minutes!
If It’s a BABY (Primary) Tooth:
- DO NOT try to reinsert it – Baby teeth should not be placed back into the socket.
- Control bleeding – Have your child bite on clean gauze or a soft cloth.
- Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- Call us to assess the injury and ensure no damage to the permanent teeth underneath!
Even though baby teeth fall out naturally, a premature loss may affect speech, eating, or alignment of adult teeth.
What NOT to Do If a Tooth Is Knocked Out
- Don’t let the tooth dry out – Always keep it moist!
- Don’t touch the root – Handle only the top part of the tooth.
- Don’t wrap it in a tissue or paper towel – This can damage the delicate root.
- Don’t delay – Get to our office ASAP for the best chance of saving the tooth!
